Breadth = companies with qualifying insider buying in the window ÷ eligible companies in the industry. The change is in percentage points against the window of equal length just before. It counts companies, not money or share prices, and does not predict returns.

How it works
  • Breadth. For each industry: the companies whose insiders bought in the window, divided by the industry’s eligible companies. A company counts once however many insiders or trades it has.
  • Eligible and buying, by market. Europe: issuers in the national insider registers with an industry, symbol and exchange; buying when insiders’ qualifying purchases exceed their sales in the window (derivatives, subscriptions, employment-contract and automatic or trading-plan transactions do not count). United States: companies with a Form 3, 4 or 5 filing in the 365 days to the window’s end and an approved industry; buying when an insider made an open-market purchase (code P). South Korea: companies with an OpenDART insider report in the 365 days to the window’s end and an industry; buying when individuals’ exchange trades in common shares net to a purchase.
  • Windows. Trades are counted by trade date. The current window is the last 30 or 90 days to the latest data date; the comparison window is the same number of days just before it. Both use the same rules and the same industry map.
  • Change. Current breadth minus previous breadth, in percentage points. A move under 0.05 points is shown as unchanged.
  • Missing data. An industry is shown only when its mapping passes the 90% coverage and data-quality checks. With no eligible company in the comparison window the change is shown as —, never as zero. A European register whose records start after the comparison window begins is left out of both windows.
  • Closed-End Funds are listed investment funds, an instrument type rather than an industry, so they get their own line.
  • Chart. Current breadth: bars from zero on one scale for every industry in the panel. Change: bars from a zero line, on a scale symmetric around it. Sorting changes the order of the industries only, not their figures.
